abstract = {Serious concerns have been raised on the potentially negative impact of public measures to contain the COVID-19 pandemic on academic research, including the closure of research facilities, and the challenges of lockdown. However, it is unclear whether COVID-related mobility restrictions have penalized academic productivity, and if this is the case, whether it has had an equal impact on all research areas and countries. Here, we examined about 9.2 million submissions to 2689 Elsevier journals in all research areas in 2018–2021 and estimated the impact of anti-COVID mobility restriction policies on submissions to journals. Results showed that anti-contagion public measures had a positive impact on academic productivity. However, submission patterns changed more in non-Western academic countries, with the exception of Italy, which had stringent lock-down measures. During the early stages of the pandemic, the abnormal peak of submission was dominated by health & medical researchers, whereas later, there was an increase in submissions to social science & economics journals. Although anti-contagion public measures have contributed to change academic work, it is difficult to estimate whether they will have any potentially long-term effect on the academic community- either positive or negative.},

abstract = {ClassNoise is an R package for modeling, generating, and validating data affected by class noise. It provides an environment where the type of noise, its magnitude, and the resulting noisy samples are precisely known. Drawing inspiration from probabilistic modeling, ClassNoise adopts Bayesian Networks to simplify the description of noise models through conditional independence. A workflow for designing noise models, exploiting machine learning techniques and expert knowledge, is proposed. Although, conceived as a tool for researching the impact of class noise on supervised machine learning, ClassNoise can be useful in any field where the effects of noise need to be established.},

abstract = {The assessment of problems identified by peer researchers during peer review is difficult because the content of these reports is typically confidential. The current study sought to construct and apply a glossary for the identification of methodological and statistical concepts mentioned in peer review reports. Three assessors created a list of 1,036 different terms in 19 categories. The glossary was tested on the confidential PEERE database, a sample of 496,928 peer review reports from various scientific disciplines. The most frequently mentioned terms were related to data presentation (found in 40.3 % of the reports) and parametric descriptive statistics (33.3 %). Review reports suggesting a rejection were more likely to mention methodological issues, whereas statistical issues were raised more frequently in review reports recommending revisions. Across disciplines, methodological issues were more frequently mentioned in social sciences (64.1 %), while health and medical sciences were more predictive for the identification of statistical issues (40.1 %). Female reviewers identified more statistical issues compared to male reviewers. These results indicate that the glossary could be used as an additional tool for the assessment of the content of peer review reports and for understanding what help authors may need in writing research articles.},

abstract = {Summary of Findings (SoF) tables concisely present the main findings of evidence synthesis of health evidence, but how users navigate it to understand and interpret the presented information is not clear. We quantified the interaction of medical students with an SoF table while answering a knowledge quiz. Read&Learn tool was used to measure the number of target and non-target table cells visited for each question and the time spent on these cells. Students positively identified target elements for quiz questions and answered simpler questions, but struggled with critical thinking and understanding study outcomes. The question on outcomes with the largest improvement post-intervention had the fewest correct answers, the longest interaction with table cells and the most opened cells before answering. Students spent a median of 72% of the time reading target table cells. A heatmap of the interactions showed that they were mostly answer-oriented. Further development of the tool and metrics is needed to use the tool and the metrics to study the cognitive processes during the assessment of health evidence.},

abstract = {We aimed to examine the differences in articles, peer review and editorial processes in Medical and Health Sciences vs. Social Sciences. Our data source was Open Research Central (ORC) portal, which hosts several journal platforms for post-publication peer review, allowing the analysis of articles from their submission, regardless of the publishing outcome. The study sample included 51 research articles that had Social Sciences tag only and 361 research articles with Medical and Health Sciences tag only. Levenshtein distance analysis showed that text changes over article versions in social science papers were statistically significant in the Introduction section. Articles from Social Sciences had longer Introduction and Conclusion sections and higher percentage of articles with merged Discussion and Conclusion sections. Articles from Medical and Health Sciences followed the Introduction-Methods-Results-Discussion (IMRaD) structure more frequently and contained fewer declarations and non IMRaD sections, but more figures. Social Sciences articles had higher Word Count, higher Clout, and less positive Tone. Linguistic analysis revealed a more positive Tone for peer review reports for articles in Social Sciences and higher Achievement and Research variables. Peer review reports were significantly longer for articles in Social Sciences but the two disciplines did not differ in the characteristics of the peer review process at all stages between the submitted and published version. This may be due to the fact that they were published on the same publication platform, which uses uniform policies and procedures for both types of articles.},

abstract = {As the world continues to change and evolve, students must acquire a diverse set of competencies and skills that focus on sustainability. This term extends beyond environmental matters, encompassing educational aspects, such as critical thinking, communication, creativity, collaboration, and problem solving, all of which are crucial components. In order to promote these aspects in an engineering learning environment, using educational tools that emulate real-life tasks related to students’ future careers can significantly boost their motivation. It could be worth considering the integration of teaching techniques that align more closely with the professional work of engineering. By embracing this pedagogical approach, educators can empower students, contributing to the advancement of science and technology. The field of programming embedded or integrated systems presents numerous professional opportunities for students of Telecommunications and Electronics Engineering degrees. An embedded systems engineer is a specialized professional responsible for co-designing electronic devices based on a processor. This contribution analyzes the impact of introducing a mobile robot platform as a cutting-edge teaching approach that merges problem-based learning (PBL) with hands-on learning. The platform’s main features include robustness in reducing interconnection problems and the possibility of co-designing projects with multiple integrated sensors and actuators. This learning tool makes it possible for students to work with a professional embedded system that they can find in their future careers. Hence, assessing the impact of this learning strategy using the robot and how students perceive it to enhance their professional skills is fundamental. This evaluation compares students’ experiences in previous subjects with the learning approach proposed in this research that intends to support students to prepare them more effectively for transitioning to professional life. The evaluation involves a previous and post-questionnaire that examines three dimensions: energy, absorption, and dedication. Based on the findings, it can be concluded that the general satisfaction item showed the highest growth rate (1.05 out of 5.00) and the best score in the post-questionnaire. This indicates that, overall, the students evaluated the impact of using the learning strategy described positively. After completing the learning experience, the dimension of dedication showed the highest increase (0.73 out of 5.00) among all three dimensions.},

abstract = {This paper presents a study on the perceptions of primary school teachers regarding their knowledge, usefulness, and use of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) in education. Likewise, the relationship between sex, age, working time and the educational center in which it is found with the perceptions about ICT is obtained. To answer these questions, a battery of 14 categorical closed questions is designed, divided into four blocks: socio-demographic information; knowledge of ICT; usefulness of ICT; and use of ICT. In the context of measuring the knowledge, usefulness and use of ICT in education, the novelty of this work relies on the design of an indicator for each of the ICT-related blocks following the methodology of Human Development Indicators created by the United Nations Development Program. In this research, 119 teachers from Spanish primary schools were chosen as the study sample to answer the questions’ battery. The results show a direct relationship between knowledge, usefulness, and use, although not significant. Although teachers are aware of the usefulness of ICT, and the Covid-19 pandemic has increased the use of technological tools for planning teaching in blended or distance learning lessons, this does not mean teachers have a greater knowledge of ICT. In addition, the findings indicate a greater knowledge by teachers in public schools, which contrasts with the finding that teachers in grant-assisted schools make the most use of ICT and find it the most useful. Finally, it is also suggested that the study's methodology and approach could be applied to other contexts or countries.},

abstract = {This article aims to analyze the capability of family policies to reverse the sharp decline in fertility that has been observed in Spain in recent decades. The analysis was carried out by applying two mathematical techniques: the genetic algorithm and the strategic scenarios. Firstly, a mathematical model was designed and validated adjusting the combined performance of fertility and family policies during the 2008–2019 period. Subsequently, this model was applied to the future (2020–2060) to extrapolate the evolution of fertility considering different models of family policies. The results demonstrate that a model of family policies that is coherent with other socially desirable objectives, such as gender and social equality, will be insufficient to reverse the current downward trend in fertility. Therefore, these outcomes point to the need to articulate and harmonize diverse public policies considering the principles of equality and well‐being to modify the recent decline in fertility. An increase in fertility must therefore be identified as a socially desirable goal and public policies must be adapted to this objective, in the understanding that fertility not only requires family policies but also their coherence with the employment and educational policies and work–life balance mechanisms offered by public institutions.},

However, measuring this developmental function of peer review is difficult as it requires fine-grained data on reports and journals without any optimal benchmark. To fill this gap, we adapted a recently proposed quality assessment tool and tested it on a sample of 1.3 million reports submitted to 740 Elsevier journals in 2018–2020. Results showed that the developmental standards of peer review are shared across areas of research, yet with remarkable differences. Reports submitted to social science and economics journals show the highest developmental standards. Reports from junior reviewers, women and reviewers from Western Europe are generally more developmental than those from senior, men and reviewers working in academic institutions outside Western regions. Our findings suggest that increasing the standards of peer review at journals requires effort to assess interventions and measure practices with context-specific and multi-dimensional frameworks.},

abstract = {Peer review is key for public trust of academic journals. It ensures that only rigorous research is published but also helps authors to increase the value of their manuscripts through feedback from reviewers. However, measuring the developmental value of peer review is difficult as it requires fine-grained manuscript data on various stages of the editorial process, which are rarely available. To fill this gap, we accessed complete data from Royal Society journals from 2006 to 2017, and measured manuscript changes during peer review from their initial submissions. We then estimated the effect of the number of reviewers and the evaluation of reviewers on manuscript development and their citations after publication. We found that the number of reviewers had an almost linear effect on manuscript change although with decreasing marginal effects whenever more than two reviewers were involved. This effect did not depend on the initial quality of manuscripts. We also found that changes due to reviewers tended to increase a manuscript’s probability of being cited at least once after publication. While our findings show the multiple functions of peer review for manuscript development, research with larger and more representative journal samples is needed to develop more systematic measures that reflect the complexity of peer review.},

abstract = {Improving the methodological rigour and the quality of data analysis in manuscripts submitted to journals is key to ensure the validity of scientific claims. However, there is scant knowledge of how manuscripts change throughout the review process in academic journals. Here, we examined 27 467 manuscripts submitted to four journals from the Royal Society (2006–2017) and analysed the effect of peer review on the amount of statistical content of manuscripts, i.e. one of the most important aspects to assess the methodological rigour of manuscripts. We found that manuscripts with both initial low or high levels of statistical content increased their statistical content during peer review. The availability of guidelines on statistics in the review forms of journals was associated with an initial similarity of statistical content of manuscripts but did not have any relevant implications on manuscript change during peer review. We found that when reports were more concentrated on statistical content, there was a higher probability that these manuscripts were eventually rejected by editors.},

abstract = {Windowing is a guided sub-sampling method conceived to reduce the number of training examples when inducing decision trees, while preserving accuracy. However, its use has been discouraged when dealing with noisy datasets because of a lack of observed benefits. This work proposes modeling such domains probabilistically to study the performance of Windowing under controlled conditions, i.e., on artificial discrete datasets with binary class affected by different levels of noise. An extension of Windowing that removes all inconsistency in the datasets as a preprocessing step, Windowing Inconsistency Filtering (WIF), is proposed to cope with noise in class values. J48, as implemented in Weka, is adopted as a tree-inductive algorithm. WIF, Windowing, and J48 are then compared on a repeated 10-folds cross-validation process over noisy and clean test sets. Results show that the three algorithms obtain similar predictive performance, as expected, but WIF keeps reducing the number of used training examples despite the presence of noise. Future work includes considering different inductive algorithms, e.g., Naïve Bayes, to establish if the adopted extension generalizes beyond decision trees.},

abstract = {This paper presents the design and validation process of a set of instruments to evaluate the impact of an informal learning initiative to promote Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) vocations in students, their families (parents), and teachers. The proposed set of instruments, beyond assessing the satisfaction of the public involved, allow collecting data to evaluate the impact in terms of changes in the consideration of the role of women in STEM areas and STEM vocations. The procedure followed to develop the set of instruments consisted of two phases. In the first phase, a preliminary version (v1) of the questionnaires was designed based on the objectives of the Girls4STEM initiative, an inclusive project promoting STEM vocations between 6 and 18 years old boys and girls. Five specific questionnaires were designed, one for the families (post activity), two for the students (pre and post activity) and two for the teachers (pre and post avitivity). A refined version (v2) of each questionnaire was obtained with evidence of content validity after undergoing an expert judgment process. The second phase was the refinement of the (v2) instruments, to ascertain the evidence of reliability and validity so that a final version (v3) was derived. In the paper, a high-quality set of good practices focused on promoting diversity and gender equality in the STEM sector are presented from a Higher Education Institution perspective, the University of Valencia. The main contribution of this work is the achievement of a set of instruments, rigorously designed for the evaluation of the implementation and effectiveness of a STEM promoting program, with sufficient validity evidence. Moreover, the proposed instruments can be a reference for the evaluation of other projects aimed at diversifying the STEM sector.},
